What Are Griddlers?

Griddlers are picture logic puzzles — identical to nonograms, Picross, and Hanjie. The name "Griddlers" became popular through online puzzle communities and dedicated websites in the early 2000s.

In a Griddler puzzle, you are given a grid with numeric clues along each row and column. Each clue describes consecutive groups of filled cells in that line. By reasoning about these clues, you determine which cells are filled and which are empty, ultimately revealing a hidden image.

Griddlers vs. Nonograms

Griddlers and nonograms are the exact same puzzle. The different names reflect the puzzle's popularity across various communities:

  • Nonogram — the original name, from inventor Non Ishida
  • Picross — Nintendo's brand name for the format
  • Griddlers — widely used in online puzzle communities
  • Hanjie — common in UK puzzle publications

The rules, solving techniques, and satisfaction are exactly the same. If you enjoy Griddlers, you'll feel right at home with our nonogram collection.

How to Solve Griddlers

The key to solving Griddlers is the overlap technique: for each line, slide the clue blocks as far left as possible, then as far right. Cells that must be filled in both positions are determined. Mark known empty cells with an X, and iterate between rows and columns until the entire grid is solved.
